Generally when you share a folder to a user, permissions are given to any parent folders, in order for that user to see the folder you are sharing. In a recent update we gave you the ability to share a subfolder several levels deep with a user and limit their permissions to only that folder's contents. This is very useful if you don't want to create a shared folder that only that user can access. So, to start, we add two Collaborators from users previously added to this Tenant; in this case they are Alice and Joe. Both of these users are added as collaborators for this folder "FilesforSharing". To set this up I created three folders, Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3. Then you go to the Folder Permissions tab and click the small down arrow (1) and choose Level 1; there you add Alice, giving her full permissions. So, from the Cluster Admin Dashboard in the Web Portal, on the right-hand side, click System Diagnostic Report to get started. (Narrative continues below...) This tool analyzes your installation to ensure that all the parameters are set-up correctly. To get a report on these parameters, simply click the text, “Start System Scan to Generate Report”. As you can see, this tool quickly assesses your setup parameters and shows you items that need your attention. Initially we decided to collect the most common settings where issues occur for new users of CentreStack, but in the weeks ahead, we will be adding more items to this list to make you aware of any other issues that may be present.   That’s it for this video. In the attached video, I will  show you how easy it is to setup a WebDAV server connection to your CentreStack folders and files. CentreStack provides WebDAV Server Support primarily for Mobile Devices. This allows mobile applications like GoodReader on iOS devices to access and update files on the CentreStack cloud drive directly and ensures that the file changes will remain synchronized. This is especially important with iOS devices like the iPhone and iPad, where applications do not directly communicate with other applications. CentreStack has integrated WebDAV support to solve this. It does require you to have a valid SSL Certificate on the CentreStack server to take advantage of this feature. We are using GoodReader in this example of how to set it up. As you can see, setting up a WebDAV connection with an application like GoodReader on your iOS device is very straightforward. CentreStack is a file sync and share solution. It is usually installed in a data center, with a public IP address and a SSL certificate for a DNS name. The server agent is a client for CentreStack. It can be installed in a remote location, typically on a file server inside an Active Directory domain. The point of CentreStack is sharing! There are several ways you can share files using this powerful application. In the attached videos you can learn how to share photos with anyone using an email address. You will also see how easy it is to create editable files that you can share for read/write capability with a non-CentreStack user. This has the added benefit of automatically creating a Guest account for that user in your CentreStack system. Great news for CentreStack MAC users! We are constantly improving our client applications and now our newest update to the Mac OS CentreStack client includes compatibility with the September release of MAC 10.13 High Sierra. Here we leverage the User-Approved Kernel Extension Loading feature to make it easier for MAC users to install our client software. In short, this is a change that requires the user to approve third-party kernel extensions (KEXTs). Approval is automatically granted to third-party KEXTs that were already present when upgrading to macOS High Sierra. The following screenshot demonstrates what you can expect to see when installing our client.  

CentreStack is different from other file sync and share solutions by focusing on security and centralized management. There are many security features already, such as leveraging NTFS permission, using drive based access model and etc. As a recent feature, now there is a group policy item that controls client side encryption.  This feature is very unique to drive based access model. As you may be aware, there are two methods when it comes to file sync and share. One method is that there is  a local folder that is 100% sync to cloud. The other is that there is a virtual drive letter that is sync to cloud. The first is folder based, and the second is drive based. In the folder based model, the local folder is basically controlled by the local operating system and there is not much you can do besides the BitLocker or some third party app like TrueCrypt. CentreStack is a managed file sync and share solution. It is different from other file sync and share solution in that it has client side drive mapping support, instead of having a sync folder. When it comes to client side drive mapping, a native benefit is file locking. Many other file sync and share solution is built on top of folder synchronization. With folder synchronization, it is not easy to do file locking, nor file permission because after the file is synchronized to local machine, the user has full control. With drive mapping support, like CentreStack’s client applications does, it is possible to do file locking. Because the request for the file first reaches the drive , and the drive can decide what to do first before the request goes to the real file. Here is a demonstration video.

CentreStack is a managed file sync and share solution. File and folder sharing is one of the core competency. In practice, there are two types of sharing functionality. One is sharing with internal users, where files and folders are more controlled by Active Directory user and user group and permission related to users and groups. This type of sharing is very similar to the traditional network share in the local area network, now is called Team Folder in CentreStack’s term. You can think of Team Folder as an extension of Network Share to the Wide Area Network – a.k.a. Cloud. The other is sharing with external users. This is something we never saw with t he local area network share. The external share has ability to share with external email address, set expiration, set a one-time password and so on. This video explained the two types of file sharing.

There are a few changes in the CentreStack installation and configuration to make it easy. First – One less question in Install Previously, there is an installation screen asking about whether you need Enterprise Edition or Service Provider Edition. The difference is small, just single tenant against multi-tenant, with some optimization for single tenant when you can use sAMAccountName, UPN and Email to login to Active Directory and allow AD users to be created on-demand. Now service provider can also use sAMAccountName to login so that bridge the gap further so no need to ask for the question again.
