Cloud Storage APIs & Universal Connectors

clip_image004[5]When it comes to cloud storage, there are many standards out there in the market. For example, Amazon S3 is the leader and many are using S3 API to create a S3-clone service. Rackspace Cloud Files and OpenStack are trying to create its own standard by giving away the software to open source community. Microsoft has its own standard in Azure Storage, incorporating Table storage and SQL storage, in addition to blob storage.  There are also other technology heavy-weights that are trying to setup CDMI as the cloud computing standard.

In this race, every party has a different edge. For example, Amazon is expanding S3 API to include support for IAM (Identity and Account Management) with its edge in offering the most maturing and most adopted services in its platform. OpenStack has an edge in Open Source, which potentially can be adopted by many organizations looking to have full control of their code base. Microsoft has an edge too because whatever it does, it owns a significant market share. The rest of the consortium can unite together to push for CDMI.

Owning the standards means owning the future of Cloud Computing and Cloud Storage. Owning a big chunk of the market share means owning the standard. Thus, there is no clear sight of which standard will win since every service provider is busy earning the market share.

This means, there is a market for cloud storage universal connectors that works with each and every cloud storage service providers, which happens to be the same as Gladinet’s goal. so far, Gladinet software is connecting user’s desktop, laptop, file servers and web browsers to cloud storage service providers.

Here is a list of cloud storage service providers Gladinet supports.

  1. Amazon S3
    • Amazon S3 (East, West, EU, Singapore)
  2. Box.Net
  3. Caringo CAStor
  4. EMC Atmos
    • AT&T Synaptic Storage, Peer1 CloudOne, Redstor, MTI, Ninefold
  5. Google Storage for Developers
  6. Rackspace Cloud Files
    • US & UK
  7. OpenStack
  8. Mezeo
  9. Windows Azure Storage
  10. Misc. – SkyDrive, Google Docs, Amazon Cloud Drive and etc..

Over the years, the Gladinet software is refined every iteration to support more cloud storage service providers. Currently all three Gladinet products, Cloud Desktop, CloudAFS and Cloud Backup support all the cloud storage service providers listed above.
