Is Amazon S3 Expensive?
What is one Terabyte? It is 1024 GB or the same size as the hard drive comes with your Mid to High-end PC nowadays or a low-end PC comes tomorrow.
What does it cost to store that on Amazon S3? It is $150 per month. It doesn’t sound like much, does it?
Now you have 100 employees. Each has 1TB storage to store over time. If it is still on Amazon S3, it is $15,000 per month. Still doesn’t sound like much? I don’t think so.
If you have 500 employees and spend $75,000 per month on S3 storage, that is about $1M for storage cost annually.
So is Amazon S3 expensive? It depends. For regular Joe storing GBs of photos or music, it is a small bill and it is OK.
For enterprises storing TBs to hundreds of TBs, it is expensive. This is when private enterprise cloud makes sense. It is still disruptive because it is easier to manage and provision with the HTTP REST interface and central management, as compared to traditional SAN and NAS.
Gladinet has been supporting many public clouds such as Amazon S3, AT&T Synaptic Storage, Windows Azure Storage, Google Storage and so on. Recently we were introduced to the private cloud concepts by our partners. Stay tuned, Gladinet support is coming to private enterprise cloud, if not already.
