Today Gladinet released Gladinet Cloud Enterprise . It is an installable cloud storage solution for enterprises concerned about security, control and compliance. It contains all the Gladinet Cloud Team Edition features you see on www.gladinet.com and packaged into a Windows Installer (MSI) package. Typically it is a 5-10 minutes installation and configuration process and it will be up and running immediately. Since the package can run onsite, there are some additional feature sets, such as deep Active Directory integration so existing Active Directory users can start using the Gladinet Cloud for Enterprise directly. Here is another use case keeps coming up from customers using Gladinet Cloud. As one potential customer asked: “We search for a solution for our team. We have a file server with Active Directory for our projects, with a team of users travelling around. Gladinet Cloud Android App has been released to the Google Play Store since last week.  It is an important addition to the Gladinet Cloud for Teams. After the Web client, Windows client, File server agent, Mac and iOS app support, now it is Android app. You can enjoy a native android app when browsing Gladinet Cloud from your android devices. The first release targets Android devices with OS version 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) and above (4.1 - Jelly bean). An interesting use case came up recently. It is an university environment, with two popular technologies involved in the setup. One is VDI – Desktop Virtualization. The other is Google Drive. Desktop virtualization provides an easy to manage way for universities to deploy desktops to students. Most of the students have their own device such as laptop. With VDI, the students can run a virtual desktop loaded with university-licensed software for class related activities. Google Drive provides an easy way for students to store class related materials and projects. Most of the students have Google Drive installed on their laptop so the class materials can stay inside Google Drive. Problem arises when students want to access Google Drive inside the virtual desktop. There are many ways to convert local storage to cloud storage. For small data size, some will just do a simple drag and drop upload. For medium data size, some will setup two-way sync to cloud storage. For large data set, above methods are not practical because it takes a long time to transfer data from local to cloud.  Some service providers provide bulk injection, allowing you to mail storage media like a hard drive to them and they will do the conversion in their data center. Local File Server for team collaboration is a very familiar use case . Typically a local IT administrator set up a file server in a Local Area Network(LAN) environment, such  as in a branch office. The whole office then use network shares to share files. For example, below is a picture of a Shared folder in Windows File Server 2008. The local folder’s name is TeamFolderLocal and it is published as a network share. Cloud-based team folder is also a very familiar use case . When you have a file server and you want to consider moving to the cloud with cloud storage, it is not as simple as moving a house from point A to point B. You need business continuity because the file server is the collaboration point that needs to continue to run. You don’t want a full two-way sync solution between your file server and cloud storage either, because the volume on the file server is usually bigger than the data on a consumer PC. So when a two-way sync solution is popular for consumer, it may not be as good for a file server in small business because of bandwidth consumption. You need a hybrid solution. The previous two articles discussed different access methods to your IBM SmartCloud Object Storage and Team Folder collaboration features. This article introduces the Folder and File Sharing feature with your IBM SmartCloud Storage. Functionality wise, Folder and file sharing is similar to team folder collaboration. There are 3 major differences. (1) Team folder is managed by administrator for the team; while Folder sharing is managed by each team member. (2) Team folder can only be published to known team users; while folder sharing can be shared to external user on a read-only basis, in addition to sharing with internal team users. (3) Team folder is always collaboration on a folder level; while folder and file sharing can share on a single file level.

Access SoftLayer Object Storage from Local File Server

Access cloud storage from a local file server is different from accessing it from a desktop machine. First the software on the file server needs to run as a background Windows server, while the software on the desktop can be a desktop application running inside user’s logon session. Second the software needs to mount the cloud storage as  a virtual file system volume, while on the desktop, there are many more ways to map a network drive.
